As the summer holidays draw to a close, I’m finding myself in the thick of preparing my kids for the new school year. Between shopping for new books, picking out school bags, and sticking names on all their materials, my mind can’t help but wander. I’ve been thinking a lot about other moms out there, especially those with more than two kids. I have two, and I’m already feeling the stress of easing back into reality. I can only imagine how moms with three or four kids are managing this transition.

As much as I’m eager for the kids to get back to school so I can reclaim a bit of my time, catching up with friends and diving into my projects, I’m also dreading some parts of it. The early wake-ups, the school runs, and the endless meal and snack prep can feel overwhelming. However, as I navigate these mixed emotions, I’m also filled with gratitude. During these moments of juggling excitement and stress, I’ve realised how important it is to take care of myself. Thinking about all of you who are going through similar experiences, I wanted to share some self-care tips that have been helping me ease back into the school year without feeling too much pressure.

1. Embrace a Morning Ritual

Starting your day with a calm, intentional morning ritual can make a significant difference in how the rest of your day unfolds. Dedicate 10-15 minutes each morning to yourself, whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea in silence, journaling your thoughts, or practicing some light stretching. This quiet time can help set a positive tone for the day ahead.

2. Indulge in Sensory Self-Care

Creating a sensory-rich environment can be incredibly soothing. Try incorporating aromatherapy into your routine with essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus in your bath or shower. Another idea is to have a mindful tea or coffee break during the day, where you focus entirely on the experience—the warmth of the cup, the aroma, and the taste.

3. Reclaim Your Space

With the house quieter than usual, this is a perfect time to declutter a small area. Start with something manageable, like your bedside table or a kitchen drawer. Decluttering not only refreshes your physical space but also clears mental space, making you feel more at ease.

4. Plan a Micro-adventure

Before the hustle and bustle of routine fully kick in, plan a small adventure close to home. Explore a neighbourhood you’ve never visited, take a new hiking trail, or visit a local museum. These mini getaways can inject some excitement into your week and offer a break from routine.

5. Practice Gentle Transitions

Transitioning back into work or a more structured schedule can be challenging. Allow yourself to ease into it gently. Start with the simpler tasks on your to-do list and gradually build up momentum. If you can, reconnect with a friend over coffee to share stories from the summer and support each other in this transition.

6. Engage in Creative Expression

Creative activities can be incredibly therapeutic. Whether you enjoy drawing, crafting, or cooking, set aside some time to express yourself creatively. Try out a new recipe, doodle in a sketchbook, or make something with your hands. This form of expression can be a powerful way to release stress and rejuvenate your spirit.

7. Nourish Your Body and Mind

Taking care of your body is essential for overall well-being. Consider cooking a meal that excites you, focusing on the process as much as the end result. In the evenings, establish a calming wind-down routine—dim the lights, play soft music, and enjoy a warm bath or a good book to signal to your body that it’s time to relax.

8. Celebrate Small Wins

At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect on your small victories. Did you manage to enjoy your coffee a little more today? Did you share a laugh with your kids? These seemingly minor moments are worth celebrating, as they contribute to your overall sense of well-being.

This back-to-school season doesn’t have to be a rush. By taking things slowly, embracing small rituals, and focusing on self-care, you can transition smoothly into this new chapter. Remember, taking care of yourself is the best way to show up fully for your family, work, and everything else that matters to you.
